Challenge

The client had submitted two unsuccessful grant applications to the Wellcome Trust for a maternal and child health program. Their proposals were technically sound but failed to articulate impact clearly, lacked alignment with funder priorities, and presented a disjointed theory of change. Their internal team had limited grant-writing capacity.

Approach

We conducted a thorough review of both prior applications and the funder's current strategic priorities. We rebuilt the theory of change with a clear logic model, rewrote all narrative sections with attention to funder language, strengthened the budget justification, and prepared the team for a potential site visit review. We also coordinated with the client's MEL team to strengthen the evaluation framework.

Outcome

The revised application was awarded the full requested amount of $2.4 million over three years — the NGO's largest single grant to date. The funder cited the proposal's clarity of impact and strong evaluation plan as key factors in the award decision.

Preparing a 280-Page Doctoral Thesis for Submission at a UK University

An ESL doctoral candidate needed a rigorous language edit and academic register polish across a 280-page interdisciplinary thesis before the submission deadline.

Challenge

The candidate, whose first language is Mandarin, had written a high-quality interdisciplinary thesis spanning computational linguistics and cognitive psychology. While the content was strong, the language in several chapters was below academic register, contained inconsistent tense usage, and included recurring structural patterns common in Chinese academic writing that needed adjustment for UK academic norms.

Approach

Dr. Nair led a full developmental and copy-edit, working chapter-by-chapter with the candidate over three weeks. We provided tracked edits with explanations, a style guide tailored to the university's requirements, and a final proofread before submission. We preserved the candidate's voice while raising clarity and fluency throughout.

Outcome

The thesis was submitted on time and passed with minor corrections — one of the top outcomes in the candidate's cohort. The candidate's supervisor commented that the writing quality had improved dramatically from the draft stage. The candidate has since published two chapters as journal articles.

We designed and coordinated a 1,200-respondent baseline survey across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Ethiopia for a USAID-funded livelihoods programme.

Challenge

The programme required a rigorous quantitative baseline across five countries with varied linguistic and cultural contexts, a tight 10-week window, and IRB-compliant protocols. The client's internal M&E team lacked regional field research capacity and needed a partner who could coordinate enumerators, manage data quality, and deliver a clean dataset for analysis.

Approach

James Okello led the design of the survey instrument, sampling strategy, and enumerator training across all five countries. We recruited and trained 45 local enumerators, deployed digital data collection via KoBoCollect, conducted real-time data quality checks, and managed translation into Swahili, Amharic, and Kinyarwanda. IRB approval was secured in parallel with field preparation.

Outcome

1,247 interviews were completed within the 10-week timeline with a 97% data quality pass rate. The clean dataset was delivered to the client for analysis on schedule. The programme used the baseline data to successfully pass a USAID programme review and received continuation funding.

Mixed-Methods Analysis for a University Public Health Research Study

A research team had collected 18 months of mixed-methods data but lacked the analytical capacity to process it in time for a journal submission deadline.

Challenge

The university research team had completed data collection for a study on urban food insecurity, including 800 survey responses and 40 semi-structured interviews. With a journal submission deadline approaching, they needed rapid mixed-methods analysis — quantitative regression modelling, thematic coding, and integration of findings — delivered to publication-ready standard.

Approach

Marcus Reynolds led the quantitative analysis using SPSS and R, running descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis, and multivariate regression. A qualitative specialist on our team coded all 40 interview transcripts in NVivo using a codebook the client co-developed. We then produced an integrated findings chapter with charts, tables, and narrative synthesis aligned to the journal's house style.

Outcome

The analysis was delivered in five weeks, ahead of the submission deadline. The paper was accepted for publication in the American Journal of Public Health with reviewer comments citing the analytical rigour as a particular strength. The research team has retained Worthwhile Consulting for two follow-on projects.

We supported a leading Indian biomedical research institute in developing their first NIH R01 application, navigating US funding requirements for international applicants.

Challenge

The institute had strong scientific credentials but no prior experience applying to US federal funding mechanisms. NIH R01 applications are among the most demanding in global research funding, with strict formatting, narrative conventions, and review criteria that differ significantly from other funders. The team needed strategic guidance as much as writing support.

Approach

We partnered with the principal investigator for eight weeks, starting with a full orientation on NIH review criteria and scoring rubrics. We structured the Specific Aims, Research Strategy, and Innovation sections, guided the biostatistician on the power calculation and statistical approach, and coordinated the Human Subjects and Foreign Justification components. All sections went through three rounds of internal review before submission.

Outcome

The application received a priority score in the fundable range on the first submission — an outcome achieved by fewer than 20% of first-time R01 applicants. The institute subsequently received a Notice of Award for the full five-year project period. The PI has credited the application process as a turning point in their lab's international research profile.

A six-university consortium needed a single, coherent voice across a multi-author paper submitted to a high-impact engineering journal.

The paper had already been desk-rejected once for language quality. The consortium needed the manuscript brought to the standard of a top-tier IEEE journal with a two-week turnaround.

Approach

We assigned a technical editor with an engineering background alongside Dr. Nair for language quality oversight. We standardised terminology across all sections, harmonised citations to IEEE format, restructured the abstract and introduction, and eliminated redundancy across the methodology and results sections. A final proofread was completed 48 hours before the client's deadline.

Outcome

The revised paper was accepted after one round of minor revisions — a strong outcome for a journal with a 23% acceptance rate. Reviewer comments specifically noted the clarity and consistency of the writing. The consortium has since engaged Worthwhile Consulting on a standing agreement for all future publication support.
